100 Summer Gold Medals Completed in South Korea

16-year-old “high school senior” Ban Hyo-jin (Daegu High School) won the gold medal in the women’s 10-meter shooting air rifle final at the 2024 Paris Olympics at Chatoru Shooting Center in France on the 29th, marking South Korea’s 100th gold medal in the Summer Olympics.

It was a 48-year journey, starting with the 1976 Montreal Games.

Since Yang Jung-mo was named the first-ever Olympic gold medalist in the 62kg freestyle wrestling at the Montreal Games, Korea has been harvesting gold medals at every Summer Olympics except for the 1980 Moscow Games, which was absent.

After winning six gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, he swept 12 gold medals at the 1988 Seoul Games and the 1992 Barcelona Games immediately afterwards, seven in Atlanta in 1996 and eight in Sydney in 2000.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, he won nine gold medals, and at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Games, he added 13 gold medals, the most ever.

In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the number of gold medals was reduced to nine, and in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), it was delayed by a year, winning six gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021.

A total of 96 gold medals came out to Tokyo, and if four were added to the Paris Games, it would fill 100, but the outlook was not bright as the size of the team decreased from previous years.

The number of gold medals conservatively calculated by the Korean Sports Council was five to six, and there were pessimistic expectations that it would be lower than that.

However, from the first day of the full-fledged medal race on the 27th, the day after the opening ceremony, “golden good news” flew every day and filled four in three days.

On the 27th local time, Oh Sang-wook (Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall), the sign of the fencing men’s sabre, won the Korean team’s first gold medal in the tournament by winning the individual event, and on the 28th, Oh Ye-jin (IBK Industrial Bank) of the women’s 10-meter air pistol rang “Golden Shots” in Chatoru, more than 300 kilometers away from Paris.

On the same day, the “world’s strongest” women’s archery team beat China to win 10 consecutive Olympic team titles, and Ban Hyo-jin brought his fourth gold medal of the tournament, completing 100.

Now, the South Korean team is running for its 300th medal in the Summer Olympics.

Up to Ban Hyo-jin’s gold medal, South Korea had a total of 294 medals in all-time Olympic Games with 100 gold, 93 silver, and 101 bronze.

Jeon Sang-gyun, who was ranked fourth in the weightlifting class (105 kilograms or more) at the 2012 London Games, has added another bronze medal to 295 after Russias existing bronze medalist Ruslan Albegovs doping test revealed him. Jeon will receive a medal during the Paris Olympics.

If this happens, if you add five in this competition, you can fill 300, so it is not expected to take long if the current trend continues.
