New York Seeks Pre-Budget Closing for Game Expansion

New York State’s budget approval is due April 1, 2022, and the government is trying to push ahead with two game items that will further boost the local gambling sector. The first is to increase mobile sports betting operators in the state’s new markets to allow for more diversity, and the other is the issue of Downstate Commercial Casino licensing.

Earlier this year, Empire State launched its online sports betting market, allowing a total of nine operators to offer their products online. However, some industry leaders and New York lawmakers have suggested that the number is too small and that there are no minority-run sports books

On Friday, Senator Joe Adabbo said lawmakers would try to turn the state into the nation’s top game magazine. But there are still some challenges on the way to doing so, as gambling industry representatives are shocked by a $1 billion fee and a 45% tax rate on Downstate casino license slots. The senator urged everyone to determine the value of the process.

There are other issues, such as the potential location of downstate commercial properties. Existing VLTs, such as Resorts World New York Casino and Empire City Casino, for example, still have to go through the licensing process as do other applicants. And both properties may be advantageous considering they are already operating in the state.

When it comes to mobile sports betting, industry leaders are most concerned that the 51% tax rate is too high, and the Senate’s one-person budget did not include a cut despite suggesting an increase in the number of skins, Adabo said the state would not consider it if the cut meant a cut in education costs.

Previously, several bills were proposed to further expand the state gaming industry, including the introduction of fixed Oz horse racing and NASCAR online for sports betting operators, betting kiosks at stadiums, stadiums and racetracks, and long-awaited iGaming, which Sen. says he likes the idea of expanding the industry and is in the early stages of development.

Legalization of iGaming services in Empire State was proposed by Mr. Adabbo himself in Bill S8412, which was introduced to the New York Senate. If passed, licensed casinos and game operators will be able to offer certain iGaming products online, including slot and table games. According to him, the legalization will generate about $475 million in state tax revenue each year.

Despite mobile sports betting going a little slower after the Super Bowl, the state expects high March Madness betting volumes despite restrictions. Currently, New Yorkers are not allowed to bet on a local college team participating in the NCAA Tournament, and thankfully Colgate participated in the team.
