Diaoyutai MGM Opens 2 Hotels in Qingdao, China

Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality Limited, a joint venture between China’s Diaoyutai state-owned guesthouse and U.S.-based casino operator MGM Resorts International, said in a corporate press release that it had expanded its presence in mainland China on June 10 with the launch of two branded hotels in the Lao Shan area of Qingdao, in the eastern province of Shandong.

MGM Resorts is the parent of Macau casino resort operator MGM China Holdings Ltd.

Two new luxury hotels, Diaoyutai Hotel Qingdao and MGM Qingdao, are in SIIC Center, a commercial complex in the Lao region. Diaoyutai Hotel Qingdao has 116 rooms and suites. MGM Qingdao has 334 rooms. This information was published separately by local promoters, Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality Qingdao Limited.

Participants in the inauguration ceremony (pictured) were representatives of companies and officials from Qingdao and Macau. Macao representatives included Lei Wei-Nong, the city’s economy and finance minister, sixth from left, and Maria Helena de Senna Fernandez, the head of the Macau government tourism agency (MGTO), third from right.

Corporate data highlighted that the opening of two hotels in Qingdao coincided with the mainland city’s “Mao Week in Shandong – Qingdao” tourism promotion event. Led by MGTO, the promotion sees the participation of six game operators in Macau as part of a tourism promotion campaign targeting mainland Chinese visitors as the country recovers from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Diaoyutai MGM venture has been adding hotel capacity to mainland China in recent years. The Shanghai MGM Shanghai West Burn project, unveiled in July 2022, opened on Feb. 23 this year, according to other data reviewed by GGRAsia. It has 161 rooms and 58 suites, according to a separate corporate press release.

Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality currently promotes several hotel or residence brands in the mainland, including Diaoyutai Hotels, Bellagio by MGM, Miraju by MGM, Mhuv by MGM, and MX by MGM.

In an update to Qingdao, Diaoyutai MGM Hospitality said it would start more hotels in mainland China. Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai all mentioned Macau and neighboring Guangdong Province, Ling Shui on the southern Hainan island and Wuhan in central China’s Hubei province.
