The site of a Genting Highland casino resort outdoor theme park in Genting Malaysia Bhd has been made available to the public during the Chinese New Year. That’s according to a note from Maybank IB Research, part of Maybank Investment Bhd.
“Visitors must navigate around outdoor theme parks and purchase food and beverages from food trucks. That said, the rides were not running,” said analyst Samuel Yin Sao Yang’s Monday memo.
Monday’s update re-emphasized the brokerage’s belief that a theme park operating on the site will open in the first quarter of 2020.
Yin later explained to GGRAsia that one possible reason for the unavailability of rides is an unresolved lawsuit in the United States between Genting Malaysia on one side and Fox Media Brands and the Walt Disney Company on the other regarding what was originally planned as a theme park based on Fox’s Hollywood film and entertainment output.
Genting Malaysia claimed in a more than $1 billion lawsuit filed in November that Fox had unwarrantedly withdrawn from the theme park project. Genting Malaysia claimed that the decision to withdraw was influenced by Disney, the company seeking to buy a major part of Fox’s business. Fox and Disney said the claims were fictional and “not entirely unprovoked.” In January, they announced a $46 million counterclaim.
Genting Malaysia, the operator of Malaysia’s only licensed casino complex (file photo) on the outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur, has filed several papers on the legal dispute over the theme park’s plans, but has not provided public guidance on when or if it will be possible
