Durham casino workers preparing for strike

Employees at the three Durham casinos are not very happy with their employer, Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. Recently, union workers at three of the company’s properties complained about the lack of a new collective agreement. They plan to strike if no agreement is reached before Friday, July 22, 2022.

Great Canadian Gaming Corporation is one of the largest casino companies in Canada and operates more than 20 gaming facilities across the country. The three properties in Durham are Great Blue Heron Casino, Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort. And the union members of the three venues are currently represented by Unipo, who are still negotiating with their employers.

Currently, 10 of Unipo’s negotiating teams are in talks with Great Canada Games Corporation for a new group contract. This includes representing the thousands of workers at three Durham casinos. On Tuesday, Unipo Local 1090 trustee Rob Bicknell said the union was in active negotiations and discussions were not stalled.

Mr Bicknell, who also heads the union at Scugog Island Casino, said the union was optimistic that it could reach an agreement before Friday’s deadline. He also said both sides do not want to escalate into work stoppages. According to him, Unipo Local 1090 has unionized 226 employees at the Great Blue Heron Casino and over 800 employees at Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resorts.

The union said it was putting wages, benefits and pensions at the top of the negotiating list. This applies to table games, slots, security, calculations, food and beverage, kitchen and cooking, guest services, lyrics, and maintenance. We are also considering increasing the number of stable jobs by turning part-time or temporary jobs into full-time jobs.

In an email response, Chuck Keeling, the head of the gaming giant, shared that the company continues to discuss terms with its members. He also noted that the game leader is committed to reaching an agreement that will give the company’s team members a fair and attractive wage as well as great benefits and career opportunities.

Other Ontario casino employees working on properties run by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation are also willing to protest against their employers. This includes union members of Casino Woodbine, Shorelines Casino Thousand Island, Shorelines Casino Peterborough, Elementals Casino Branford and Elementals Casino Mohawk. It remains to be seen whether an agreement can be reached.

In March, Unipo Local 444 successfully negotiated a new collective agreement for union members at Caesars Windsor Casino. The new contract compensates employees who have increased their wages over the next three years. Wages increase by C$0.50 in the first year, C$0.75 in the second year, and C$0.50 again in the third year.
