Former baseball player Jung Soo-geun sent to prosecutors without detention

According to News 1, Namyangju Southern Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 30th that it sent Jung Soo-geun to the prosecution without detention on charges of special assault.

Jung Soo-geun is accused of hitting his wife A’s forehead with a golf club at his home in Namyangju on the morning of the 20th. A reported to the police that he had suffered a minor injury to his forehead and was “assaulted with a golf club by his husband.” The police, who were dispatched after receiving A’s report, arrested Jung Soo-geun at the scene at his home and took measures to return home after completing the initial investigation.

Jung Soo-geun was drinking at the time of his arrest, and he admitted to holding a golf club, but did not admit to the assault. The police called A to complete the investigation of the victim once, and conducted two investigations into Jung Soo-geun. The police decided to send him/her as they judged that Jung Soo-geun’s charges were admitted based on the scratch on A’s head.

Jung Soo-geun has already caused a stir with another assault case. Jung Soo-geun is suspected of assaulting B in the head with a beer bottle while drinking with B and others, whom he met for the first time through an acquaintance, at a bar in Namyangju City on Dec. 21 last year. After the incident, Jung Soo-geun contacted B and expressed his apology, and reportedly admitted to the police investigation as well.

Jung started his professional career with OB Bears (now Doosan Bears) in 1995 and played for OB and Doosan until 2003, and built a stellar career, including four stolen base titles and two Korean Series titles. After moving to Lotte Giants in 2004, Jung was embroiled in rumors over all kinds of incidents and eventually retired in 2009.

Even after retirement from active duty, Jung Soo-geun reported several unsavory incidents. In August 2022, he was sentenced to one year in prison for his fifth DUI detection.
