The German media Bild held an interview with Michael Fretz, the general manager of Duisburg, on Thursday (Korea time). Fretz also mentioned Klinsmann, who served as the general manager of the BSC in Herta.
Klinsmann is the worst coach in the history of Korean soccer. Korea aimed to reclaim the top spot in 64 years at the last Asian Cup. Starting with Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur), players who played for big European clubs such as Lee Kang-in (Paris Saint-Germain) and Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich) have also joined the team. Players such as Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and Lee Jae-sung (Mainz) have also applied.
Despite the assessment that he was one of the best soccer players in the history of Korean soccer, Klinsmann could not combine the players into one team. He stuck to the same lineup every time from the group stage and responded to the opponent’s tactics late. He ended the tournament with a 0-2 loss to Jordan in the semifinals after a poor game.
It was not just about performance. While preparing for the championship, he did not reside in Korea and focused on external activities. He also appeared on TV and expressed his opinions on famous players such as Lionel Messi and Harry Kane.
After the tournament ended, there were reports of internal strife within the national team. Still, Klinsmann blamed the team for being eliminated, saying that discord within the team affected the team’s performance. The Korea Football Association eventually dismissed Klinsmann.
Korea is not the only team that Klinsmann failed. He abruptly resigned about two months after taking the helm of the BSC under Herta. At the time, his team was on the verge of being demoted, but he left without consulting with his team. He even announced his resignation through a live social media channel without proper greetings.
Pretz, who headed the Hertha BSC at the time, talked about Klinsmann. “Klinsmann came back to the managerial market after he was dismissed from the position of coach of the Korean national team. What should I do to bring him to Duisburg?” he said with a smile.
Klinsmann was the most disillusioned coach while I was serving as the general manager of the Herta BSC. “I haven’t had contact with Klinsmann since he left the BSC. There is no need for me to change the relationship,” Klinsmann said.
