GEN Singapore says it’s still waiting for Yokohama’s IR results

During Yokohama’s Request for Proposal (RFP) process to attract an integrated resort (IR), Genting Singapore Inc, one of the eligible bidders, told GGRAsia that it was still awaiting the outcome of the offering.

The company is the operator of Resort World Sentosa Casino Resort in Singapore. The casino company has connected with Japan-based entertainment and gaming giant Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. for its Yokohama project, and has selected Japan-based Kazima Inc. as its construction partner.

According to investment analysts, the recent election of a mayor against casinos has dimmed Yokohama Mayor’s hopes for IR (pictured). Opposition-backed Takeharu Yamanaka won Sunday’s Yokohama mayoral election by campaigning on an anti-IR agenda.

“Yokohama will soon issue an official statement clarifying that it will not make a bid,” Kyodo quoted Mr Yamanaka as saying on Sunday evening.

“The company has responded to the request for an offer and is awaiting results,” Genting, a Singapore spokesperson, said in an emailed response to GGRAsia on Monday after confirming the Yamanaka mayor’s victory

Yokohama finalized its RFP submission period in June. Besides Genting Singapore, Melco Resorts and Entertainment, the venue operator in Macau and the Philippines, was cited as another contender for the race. A decision on the championship offer is expected in the coming months.

GGRAsia approached Melco Resorts for comment after Yamanaka’s election but received no response until this story went online.

According to local media reports, Mr. Yamanaka, 48, is portrayed as a strong opponent of Japan’s IR policy. He suggested that the waterfront property designated as a casino complex in Yokohama would be “better used to build hotels, concert halls, and other facilities.”
