The Japanese government has opened an application period for local authorities to act as organizers of casino resorts and announced the weighting to be given when making such applications.
Under the liberalization program, up to three resorts will be allowed nationwide. Currently, only three local communities are in operation to host large-scale integrated resorts (IRs) respectively: Osaka, Nagasaki, and Wakayama.
The Japan Tourism Organization, an outside country of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, on Thursday confirmed the application schedule for local governments to have their own opinions.
The window is from 9:30 a.m. local time on Friday, October 1st to 6:15 p.m. on April 28th next year.
Applications will be reviewed on a possible 1,000-point basis in accordance with the criteria set by the national government on December 18, 2020.
According to information gathered by GGRAsia’s Japan correspondent, there are five important criteria for judging local government applications.
The resort’s contribution to enhancing the attractiveness and international competitiveness of the entire Japanese inbound tourism market (450 points), the resort’s ability to conduct business in a “continuous and safe” manner (200 points), national economic and social effects (150 points), mitigation measures related to gambling damage (150 points), and casino profits being used for the public interest (50 points).
